Reading at Barley Croft

 

We follow 'Letters and Sounds' as the phonics scheme. It is a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills to children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven. There are six overlapping phases.

 

In 2015, the school undertook a major review of the teaching and learning of phonics and now apply the guidance from Anne Smallberger, a literacy consultant, to the daily teaching.  Improvements can be seen in the end of Year 1 phonics screen.  See 'Results' page for more details.

We also use a 'Talk for Reading'/ Reciprocal Reading approach to the teaching of comprehension throughout the school.  Reciprocal Reading is an effective and proven approach to developing reading and comprehension.  It is particularly effective with children who can decode but do not fully understand what they have read.
